Whether Saint Ubaldo of Thann was or not the same saint bishop and protector of Gubbio was an issue discussed for centuries. In fact, many scholars wished the saint of Thann were an hermit called THIBAULT de Province, while the Eugubians denied strongly that the body of the uncorrupted saint they have been very fond to preserve in the Church (Basilica) on the Ingino Mountain was missing a finger.
Only today, thanks to the patient researches of don Ubaldo Braccini, bishop chancellor at Gubbio, and also to the modern technologies, we can finally say that there is no doubt that the Saint of Thann is the same with the one venerated at Gubbio.
This is proved quite by examining the relic preserved at Thann. And the reverent Braccini explains in detail in his book, LA MANO DI S. UBALDO (Saint Ubaldo’s Hand), is exactly the little piece of skin missing from the little finger of the right hand of the Saint’s Uncorrupted Body that is preserved at Gubbio.
In this manner, while Gubbio celebrates Saint Ubaldo with the Wax Feast on May 15, Thann celebrates the saint with the cremation of the three fir-trees (CREMATION DES TROIS SAPINS) on June 30th.
